“I declare to you that woman must not depend upon the protection of man, but must be taught to protect herself, and there I take my stand.”

Susan B. Anthony (Feb . 15, 1820 – Mar. 3, 1906)

According to a recent report published by United Kingdom’s The Independent newspaper, a fifth of the 25,000 women surveyed through questionnaires responded to having suffered from one form of discrimination or the other at their places of work.

While it is true that the survey took place in Europe, investigations have proven that women in this part of the world, including Nigeria, do not fare better than their UK counterparts.

In many instances, the Nigerian woman faces unnecessary pressure and discrimination at her workplace; not for any unprofessional reason or laxity on her job, but just because her creator, in His sovereignty, chose to make her feminine.

If a female employee is pretty and friendly, the odds are high that she would suffer sexual harassment from her senior male colleagues and not spared advances from her peers, if not even subordinates. Refusal to play ball, in most instances, results into her being subjected to threats, denial of entitlements, like promotion, training and, even sometimes, could face outright dismissal. Which is why, at times, in order to safeguard their jobs, some of these women decide to play ball even when it is against their wishes and moral upbringing.

Since the society constantly fails women in its responsibility to protect them as fathers, brothers, uncles and siblings, it is left for well-meaning lawmakers to use the instrument of government to enact and enforce laws to safeguard the interest of women at the workplace.
