Whether you are planning on going on a short or a long road trip, there are some things you must do to really enjoy your road travel experience or you might find yourself hating yourself after your trip. So whether you just want to visit the next part of town in 45-minute journey, or you will be spending five hours going to another state in the country, here are the things you can do to make your trip really enjoyable.

i. Prepare ahead of time

There is a difference between going on a long trip by yourself and going with your whole family; there is also a difference between being driven for the stretch of the journey by a paid driver and having to drive cross-country yourself. Whatever, you need adequate preparation. Plan for the trip ahead of time. Get the car ready and in perfect order to embark on a very long/short trip. Let your children be aware you are traveling long distance so that they won’t be much trouble asking “aren’t we there yet?”. Pack all the things you and your family needs two days before your trip so that you don’t forget anything. Know your travel route very well, or have a road atlas that can guide you along, meanwhile it is also great to ask along as you travel. Just prepare ahead and you’d save yourself a helluva trouble.

ii. Pack all necessities

It is expected that you’d pack your clothes and shoes and bath towel among others. But what about a power charger for your phone in case your phone battery goes down? You must pack an iPod or other music player, interesting books for yourself or the children to read, bottles of water and baskets of snacks, toilet tissues, pillow and blanket, writing materials and journal or whatever you fancy you just might need.

iii. Keep the kids occupied

Kids get the delighted at the idea of traveling, but they soon tire of the long journey and become troublesome. So ensure to have interesting books, audiobooks, and DVDs handy for their use and pre-occupation. You can also bring toys along for the kids, or even set them to make their favourite toys while they are seated at the back of the car; and you can ask them to tell a story if they tire of watching the DVD player in the car.

iv. Tell about the towns and villages

Almost everyone wants to know the name of the village or town they just got to, so tell the children the names of the villages or towns and anything about it. You can even tell them to ready the signboards and tell you the names of the villages and towns you reach, or guess the name of the next village or town. And you may ask them to write a story about each place they come across.

v. Make periodic stopovers

Plan to make periodic stopovers at popular towns and spend a few minutes exploring the town on foot to stretch your legs and get the blood flowing again. Children like it when you stop at major towns and show them around before moving on with your journey, and this also helps you “recharge” your energies for the remaining stretch of the journey.

vi. Eat snacks in the car

It is always delighting to eat snacks in the car while watching the trees fly past. The snacks you have prepared for the kids can be eaten as you travel, and ensure you or the kids take only water or minimum beverage drinks, not soda or alcoholic drinks. This is never good for anyone, and definitely not while you’re on the road. Ask the kids to drink less water so that they won’t have to keep on stopping you to empty their bladder.

vii. Set a target for everyone

Task everyone on the trip to get something done in preparation for the return trip back home. Maybe watch out for a memorabilia to buy or an idea to borrow from the trip which can be used back home to achieve something. Anything to keep the mind working and the trip interesting for everyone.
