Situated in North-West Nigeria and carved out of the old Kaduna State in September 1989, Katsina State was founded by Kumayo, and composed of two emirates that characterized the later establishment of the seven Hausa kingdoms.
These are Daura, Katsina, Zaria, Kano, Rano Gobir, and Biram – all descended from the lineage of Babajida and Daurama. Located in Daura is the famous and legendary Kusugu well, where the snake Sarki was said to have been killed.
Katsina State occupies 24,192 square kilometers of land, and is bordered in the east by Kano and Jigawa States, west by Zamfara State, south by Kaduna State, and north by Niger Republic. The state has 34 local government areas, and it is occupied largely by Hausa and Fulani peoples of northern Nigeria.
Katsina State has several tourist attractions, the following are some of them:
1. Gobarau Minaret
The Gobarau Minaret was constructed over 300 years ago – of baked clay and mud. It is a 50-foot or 15-meters minaret located at the centre of Katsina city. The tower has now become a symbol of the city. It is said to have been completed during the reign of Sarkin Katsina Muhammadu Korau (1398-1408 AD), the first Muslim king of Katsina. Over the centuries, it has been used as a central mosque, an Islamic centre for higher education, and a high tower for spotting invading armies.
2. Katsina Teacher’s College
The Katsina Teacher’s College was built in 1921 and it is reputed to be the oldest institution of higher learning in northern Nigeria. It was built with red-baked mud and fired clay. It remains a tourist attraction today and a place that visitors want to see when they come into Katsina town. It was declared a Historic Monument on April 23, 1959. Alhaji Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa and Alhaji Sir Ahmadu Bello graduated from this Old Training College.
3. Katsina City Gates
Constructed about 900 years ago during the reign of King Murabus, the Katsina city wall surrounds the city and has seven different gates for access. The ancient seven gates of the city wall continue to fascinate visitors to the town, and something that faraway tourists have heard about and wish to see.
4. Emirs Palaces in Katsina and Daura
Dating back to the early 19th century, the palaces of the Emir of Katsina and the Emir of Daura are sights to behold today. The ancient architectural designs of the palace structures make them a tourist attraction to many visitors, and several tourists can’t do without taking pictures of them or asking questions about their history.
5. Jibia Holiday Resort
If you wish to see ancient rocks and prehistoric paintings on caves, then the Jibia holiday resort is the place to be in Birnin Kudu. The rock paintings tell the story of the early settlers in the area, and it tells the artistic abilities of the ancient people that first dwelt in the region.
6. Kusugu Well, Daura
The Kusugu well is where the giant snake Sarki was killed by sword by Bayajida in the 10th century because the snake would only allow the people of Daura to fetch water from the well only once a week. The well and the sword that was used to kill the formidable snake can still be seen by tourists today.
7. National Museum, Katsina
This museum was established in 1921 and it was located within the premises of the Old Katsina Training College. It was declared a Historical Monument and a national museum in 1989. It houses various archaeological artifacts from all over the state and throughout the northern states of Nigeria.
