The Association of Licensed Telecoms Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) have expressed fear that the amended Taxes and Levies Act 2015 may be having negative impacts on the growth of the industry.

The Federal Government under former coordinating Minister of Economy, Ngozi Okonjo Iweala signed the Act and published in the gazette as an official document under the Federal Republic of Nigeria on May 26, 2015.

The amendment majors on the harmonization of taxes and levies in states and local government, without fixing any particular rate.

The Telcos under ALTON feels the new act has placed them at the mercy of the State governments as they states can choose to tax them as they may wish.

The issue of indiscriminate imposition of taxes and levies across states have been a subject the telcos had been dragging with the state governments. According to them, the excessive taxes were affecting the growth of telecoms industry in the country.
