Alhaji Ibrahim Ahmad, the Chief Imam of Borno, has died at the age of 90 years; Malam Isa Gusau, the Special Adviser on Communication to Governor Kashim Shettima, said in a statement in Maiduguri on Thursday.

Gusau said Ahmad died on Wednesday at a private hospital in Cairo, Egypt, after a protracted illness.

He said that the governor was saddened by the death of the chief imam.

The special adviser said, "Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno, on behalf of the state government and his family, joins citizens of Borno to mourn the death of the state's Chief Imam, Ibrahim Ahmad, who died after a protracted illness at the age of 90 years.

"Shettima described the late chief imam as one of the very strong pillars of Borno, whose demise will be greatly missed. He will be greatly missed because the death came at a time when the state is facing challenges that require the prayers and leadership guidance of great men like him.''

The special adviser also quoted Shettima as describing the death as a huge loss not only to Borno, but to the entire Northern Nigeria and the nation at large.
