Nigeria is still a relatively young country with under 15's accounting for about 43% of the population. In terms of sheer numbers, this means there are 72 million young people who are eager to work and learn how to run businesses. It is these youngsters who will shape the country’s future success.

However, youth unemployment is a big problem and the danger is that the best educated individuals, those who show the greatest potential, often seek opportunities overseas, resulting in the dreaded brain drain that so many countries experience during their development cycle.

There is hope for the youth of today though, because while the oil and gas sector is the biggest revenue earner, some new industries are booming, which is very positive news for youngsters who are educated and in a position to benefit from these developments.

Much of the recent growth has been thanks to the burgeoning global Internet market. Local entrepreneurs are providing lucrative outsourcing services to wealthy businesses and this is generating new jobs and a growing skill base in the country.

In fact some of the fastest growing companies are Internet based. For example, Dealdey, a group-buying service that was launched in March 2011, is providing its members with excellent discounts on a range of goods and services across the country. This is a classic win-win service that provides its customers with money-saving discounts while also generating revenue for the company. What’s more, local businesses attract new customers too who are after the great deals on offer.

Jobberman is now one of the leading job search engines in the country and is helping its users learn about the latest job openings. Over the first five years of its existence it has already assisted many thousands of people of all ages to find work.

This area of industry has the potential to produce positive changes across the entire country; it is expected that as the IT and service sector grows there will be a greater demand for new housing and a growing housing sector can create thousands of jobs and provide vocational training opportunities that can lead to permanent employment for many people.

Building leadership
Organizations such as the African Leadership Academy have been established specifically to teach young adults how to develop their own entrepreneurial skills and provide hope to promising teenagers all over Africa. Anyone interested in learning more about the African Leadership Academy is advised to check out their website where it is possible to read about ongoing projects and seek further details about the entire project.

These organizations are very positive for Africa as a whole, because they encourage the most talented youngsters to stay and set up businesses in their native country, rather than finishing their education overseas and subsequently set up businesses in their adopted country.

This elite group of highly educated and driven entrepreneurs is helping to make Africa a better place by giving back what they have learned to talented locals and providing job security for thousands of people.

Nigeria is advancing and there are now better career prospects for the country’s younger generation than ever before.
