The Borno state Government on Wednesday appealed to ex-Governor Ali Modu Sheriff to wait for the outcome of investigations on his alleged role as a co-sponsor of Boko Haram.

The Secretary to State Government, Alhaji Baba Jidda, gave the advice in a statement made available to newsmen in Maiduguri.

The statement was in reaction to allegations by Sheriff in Maiduguri on Tuesday that the state government was sponsoring allegations by an Australian Negotiator, Mr Stephen Davis, that he was a sponsor of the group.

It stated that the Department of State Security (DSS) said it was probing Sheriff over the allegations.

The statement also recalled that President Goodluck Jonathan at the weekend through his spokesman Dr Reuben Abati, confirmed that the security agencies were probing Sheriff.

"Why is Sheriff putting the cart before the horse? Why can't he pursue his case in court, defend whatever evidence brought by Davis and clear his name.

"Why wouldn't he await the findings of the Nigerian security agencies which are probing him as confirmed by the president?’’ the statement asked.

It, however, stated that it was a big embarrassment for the state government to have heard that an indigene of Borno was being associated with such allegation made against Sheriff.

The statement noted that the people of Borno were the worst affected by the insurgency, saying accusing their son as being partly responsible was a big embarrassment.

It said accusing the state before the media was an attempt by Sheriff to look for a scapegoat and advised that he should have taken legal action on the matter.
