The Lagos chapter of the Nigeria Union Of Journalists (NUJ) on Tuesday said that it would organise a debate for the 17 governorship candidates for Lagos ahead of the February elections.

This is contained in a statement signed by the Lagos State Chairman of the union, Mr Deji Elumoye.

The NUJ said that the debate was part of its efforts to bring good governance, excellence and accountability to bear on the contestants.

According to the union, the two-day live debate will feature all the gubernatorial candidates of the 17 political parties fielding candidates for governorship polls in the state.

The union said that the debate tagged “Lagos Decides 2015,’’ was being put together in collaboration with Lagos Television and would be transmitted live on Jan. 28 and Jan. 29.

It said that eight candidates would feature on the first day and nine on the second day.

The Union disclosed that the candidates would field questions from seasoned panelists, senior journalists, civil society groups and professional bodies.

"Questions will also be fielded from students, market men and women, artisans, commercial drivers, as well as civil servants, among others.

“The aim of the live debate is to ensure that Lagosians, irrespective of status, are given the opportunity to ask questions from the candidates on how they want to move Lagos forward,” it said.

The Union gave an assurance that adequate security would be provided during the two-day live debate.
