Sports 2014 Commonwealth Games: Nigeria wins first gold medal

Nigeria's weightlifter Chika Amalaha on Friday won the country's first gold in the women's 53kg weightlifting event.

Amalaha needed just three points to shake off the challenge of Paupa New Guinea’s Dika Toua who clinched the silver medal, while India’s Santoshi Masta settled for the bronze.

The Nigerian athlete was able to lift a best of 85kg to set a new Games record before managing 111kg in the clean and jerk for a total of 196kg in the event to secure the gold medal.

Amalaha is the second Nigerian winning a medal at the ongoing Commonwealth Games,following Nkechi Opara who won a bronze on Thursday.
