Sports 2015 AFCON Update: Côte d'Ivoire go through, Mali & and Guinea will have to wait for lots

In a dramatic turn of events in group D, only Côte d'Ivoire is the confirmed team to have qualified for the quarterfinals of the 2015 African Cup of Nations tournament in Equatorial Guinea.

A 1-0 victory by Herve Renard's team saw them top the group with five points, while a 1-1 draw between Guinea and Mali tied them at three points each level on goal difference.

Both Guinea and Mali will have to wait for the drawing of lots to determine which of them will go through to the last eight of the competition.

However, the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon have been eliminated after finishing bottom of the group.

Max Alain Gradel's first half goal was the defining factor in the match, as the Elephants lived up to their bidding to stump down Cameroon.

Mali on their part dug deep and found the equalizer through Modibo Maiga after Kevin Constant had put Guinea in front.

Although Seydou Keita also missed a penalty in the first half which would have added to Mali's goal tally.

Group D was one that all the four teams were evenly matched coming into the last round of games.

All the four teams had identical results and none was above the other by basis of results gotten in the first two matches.

And if they had squared in the last games, lots would have been drawn for them to determine who goes through.

Ivory Coast with their win took themselves out of that quagmire, not depending on lots.
But that will be the fate of Mali and Guinea who will now wait for CAF to decide which team goes through on Thursday.
