Metro 9, 500 Nigerians in foreign prisons –FG

The Federal Government has estimated the number of Nigerians in foreign prisons abroad are a minimum of 9,500. With about 752 Nigerians in United Kingdom prisons and the remaining in the Asia-Pacific region.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Olugbenga Ashiru, stated this while speaking to members of the National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party in Abuja on Thursday.

Furthermore, he stated that the predicament of Nigerians in foreign prisons are one of the major challenges to the foreign policy in Nigeria. Hence, the ministry of foreign affairs is working on Prisoner's Transfer Agreement with a good number foreign countries so that the prisoners will return home to complete their prison terms.

He entreated the media, members of civil societies, religious groups, and traditional rulers to assist the government in educating the youths against social vices so that they do not engage in them.
