Sports AFCON 2015: Guinea win lots to play in the quarter-finals

Guinea have won the drawing of lots which qualified them for a quarterfinal berth at the 2015 African Nations Cup tournament.

Going head to head with Mali, there was nothing to separate the two countries who were evenly matched after their 1-1 draw on Wednesday.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) had to draw lots on Thursday to decide which of the two teams would go through.

And the luck fell to Guinea after they were picked out of the two countries from the hat.

Guinea with the outcome of the lots, finished second of group D and will now play against the Black Stars of Ghana on Sunday.

Both head coaches had spoken before the proceedings on Thursday of the need to amend the rules in order to establish a more fair way of deciding such an outcome in future.

"We must find a more sporting way, fairer. This does not correspond to a sporting spirit," said Mali boss Henri Kasperczak, while Michel Dussuyer added: "Mali do not deserve to be eliminated in this way, just as we do not.

"Mali didn't lose a game - they played very well in the tournament."

Quarterfinal pairings:
Tunisia v Equatorial Guinea
Congo v DR Congo
Algeria v Ivory Coast
Ghana v Guinea
