Sports Agree or disagree: Was Lionel Messi really the best player at the 2014 World Cup?

Lionel Messi on Sunday won the FIFA Golden ball award, finishing as the best player of the 2014 FIFA World Cup tournament in Brazil.

To some he didn't merit the award, others believe that he was not even the best performer at the World Cup,with other players believed to have towered higher than him in Brazil(for example Thomas Muller,Bastian Schweinsteiger etc)

Messi finished the tournament with four goals all scored in the group stages of the World Cup,but failure to reignite that in the knockout stages has aroused criticisms over his performances.

HoweverArgentina coach Alejandro Sabella believes that Messi deserved the golden ball award that he won.

Sabella said Messi's award was "very deserved", adding: "He played a great World Cup to get us where he did."

On his part, speaking about the award,Messi said that he was not really interested in it,rather on winning the bigger one,World Cup

"The truth is it doesn't interest me at this moment.

"We wanted to win the World Cup for all the people in Argentina and we couldn't do it.

"We tried, but we didn't have the luck we had in other games."

Pundits have taken time to lash out at Messi, blaming him for not being able to lead his country to a World Cup truimph.

Lots of expectation was placed on Messi's shoulders that he was looked upon to part the sea before he could be adjudged to be truly 'a great player'.

However,in Sunday's final against Germany, the Barcelona player failed to sparkle on the biggest stage, when he was needed the most.

Which made it a curious paradox when Messi was named the best player of the tournament, some argue that it was a compensation of some sort.

Messi deserves to be named the tournament's best player, well depending on which part of the divide you belong to.
