What seems like a violent cabinet shake up took place within the leadership of the violent Islamic sect Boko Haram when the spiritual leader Sheikh Abubakar Shekau was shot and deposed, and a new leader, Abu Zamira Mohammed was appointed to replace him.

Shekau rose from the position of the deputy leader of the founder of the group Imam Mohammed Yusuf, who was killed by the police in July 2009, to become the leader.

He succeeded in coordinating several violent attacks carried out by the group against the nation, and especially against the police force, before now several attempts had been made by the government to capture him, but none had succeeded.

The group's spokesman Imam Liman Ibrahim said Shekau had to be replaced because he had departed from the teachings of the Holy Quoran, and that his stance and leadership thus not help the present peace process going on between the group and the Federal Government of Nigeria.
