NIGERIA - Following his landslide in the recently concluded APC convention, General Muhammadu Buhari is hard-pressed to pick a running mate for contesting at the 2015 general elections.

Vanguard newspaper reports that national leader of APC, Asiwaju Tinubu played a key role in winning the ticket for Buhari, and is now staking a claim based on Buhari's concession of the VP slot to him. This stance is being 'seriously challenged', we read, by governors who insist that one of their own must fill that slot, or at least they must have a say in who gets to cover that position.

An APC governor, speaking with journalists on the issue said that whoever they decide to stick with, he (or she) must have the right geopolitical set-up and must be compliant with the party's resolution of ethno-religious diversity/balance.

The initial plan for a strictly South-South candidate may have been revised to include South-West, leading people to believe that Amaechi may be a favorite in this decision-making process.

However, an aide to General Buhari has said “rumours that Amaechi has been chosen as the running mate are not true in any form. The running mate will be announced soon.”

He also added that "If the party exco settles for a Muslim/Muslim ticket, Tinubu himself will be the number one choice. If not, then Adams Oshiomhole stands the best chance among the rest.”
