President of Burkina Faso, Blaise Compaore has been ousted, says a spokesperson for the army.

He announced this to demonstrators in the nation capital, Ouagadougou.

Mr. Compaore had earlier announced that he would step down after his 12-month transitional government was over.

The opposition, however, continued to call for his resignation, apparently angry at his plans to amend the constitution to extend his 27-year rule.

On Thursday, protesters set fire to parliament and government buildings.

Serves him right. 27 years is too long a time to rule. African presidents surprise me.
