Sports Champions league goals record: Podolski hails Lionel Messi

Arsenal striker, Lukas Podolski has congratulated Barcelona player Lionel Messi for beating the champions league goals record.

Messi last night surpassed the Champions League record set by former Real Madrid star, Raul, who led the chart before at 71 goals, but now the Argentine has 74.

Messi netted a hat-trick in their game against Cyprus side Apoel Nicosia with Luis Suarez scoring the other goal that helped Barcelona to a 4-0 victory on Tuesday night.

" Congratulations to Messi for breaking the CL record. What an achievement !! #messi #legend #record #UCL" the Germany wrote on his official twitter page.

The 27 year old Argentine only last Saturday, broke the Spanish league goal record set by Telmo Zarra of Atletico Madrid, and if he stays in Barca, has more years to raise the bars for others to cross.

Barcelona are currently occupying the second position on the league table, trailing last season's champions league winners, Real.
