Nigeria - Asset declaration is compulsory for Nigerian government officials as mandated by the constitution, but making it public is solely up to the individual, according to the Code of Conduct Bureau.

The Bureau also is mandated to make copies of the asset available upon requests by individuals interested in the document.

A public asset declaration is an important aspect of governance. It's a measure of how honest and transparent a government is.

Nigeria's late president Umaru Musa Yar'Adua, ticked all the boxes in the declaration of his assets. The ex president made public photocopies of his duly and honestly completed assets declaration form.

Yar'Adua on assuming office had a total assets value of N856, 452,892. - See Proof

Ex president Goodluck Jonathan refused to declare his assets when sworn in as president of Nigeria.

However there are reports he'd made the declaration when sworn in as vice-president.

His assets then - cash, properties and stocks- had come to a total of approximately N295,304,420 (N300m). It's not known how much he's worth after then.

President Muhammadu Buhari when campaigning had promised to publicly declare his assets "within a month of being sworn in".

However months after being sworn in, Nigerians are yet to have a full grasp of how much the president is worth.

Yesterday, presidential spokesman Shehu Garba released a statement saying President Muhammadu Buhari has N30m in his account and also has some landed properties.

The president's total worth wasn't stated.

One gets the feeling the asset declaration was sketchy and many Nigerians don't believe Buhari is worth "just" N30m.
