The Abakaliki campaign office of the Labour Party (LP) was on Tuesday attacked with substance suspected to be Improvised Explosive Device (IED), the police have confirmed.

The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Chris Anyanwu, described the incident as unfortunate.

Anyanwu, however, said the command was on top of the matter as investigation was still ongoing and advised politicians to play the game according to the rules by avoiding thuggery, bitterness and rancour.

The incident came 24 hours after a similar attack on the All Progressive Congress office in the area.

Similarly, the office of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) had suffered a similar attack which led to the destruction of the party’s property.

The homes of some APGA supporters in Ohaukwu Local Government Area were also attacked by unknown gunmen.

According to workers at the LP office, the attack was carried out early in the morning.

A senior official of the party, who pleaded anonymity, said the property belonged to the party’s gubernatorial running mate, Sen. Paulinus Nwagu.

''We came to work this morning and noticed smoke coming from the back of the building. Upon closer look, we discovered that the walls had been charred by a fire from a paint bucket used in making the explosive.

''From what we saw, the impact would have been highly devastating if the explosive materials in the paint bucket had exploded. We thank God it didn't happen as they planned, the entire building would have been damaged or even burnt down.’’
