The youths of Okpella in the Etsako-East Local Government Council of Edo, on Thursday protested the non-employment of its indigenes by the management of a construction company, Sinoma Nigeria Ltd.

The protesters gathered under the auspices of the Nigerian Union of Welders and Fitters.

The protesters, who carried placards, stormed the site of the company located on the Auchi-Okpella-Okene highway to express their grievances over the company’s preference to use foreigners, instead of the indigenes of the area.

Speaking to the newsmen, Mr Peter Adams, said that they were protesting against the refusal by the company to give job opportunities to indigenes of the community.

Adams alleged that the company had employed foreigners in the construction of the cement factory, without giving opportunities to indigenes of the area.

"Over 200 Chinese have been employed to do the jobs meant for us. This is unacceptable. Julius Berger Nigeria Ltd which is in charge of the civil work are employing our youths, while Sinoma Nigeria Ltd handling the mechanical work, prefers using Chinese to do the job", he said.

Also, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Benin branch of association, Mr Daniel Umanu, said the company agreed with the community to employ some of its youths, adding that it had failed to honour the agreement.

"We reached an agreement with the company on the procedure for recruitment, but, nothing has been done to that effect,’’ he said.

An official of the company who preferred anonymity, however, explained that a meeting had been scheduled between the company and representatives of the community, to resolve the issues.
