The PDP has distanced itself from the current imbroglio that is the Ekiti rigging tape situation, where some of its members were heard attempting to rig the governorship elections of the state held on June 16 last year.

The voices of Musiliu Obanikoro, former minister of state for defence; former Senator Iyiola Omisore; Ekiti governor Ayo Fayose and others were heard in the audio, in a suspicious discussion with the Brigadier General of the Nigerian Army, Aliyu Momoh, on how the military would be used to rig the state's election.

Most of the men in the tape have admitted to being in the meeting, but have denied that they were discussing rigging.

PDP spokesman Olisa Metuh told Premium Times that the PDP is innocent of the schemes of any of the men mentioned in the alleged rigging audio.

He noted that his party had never asked anyone to rig on its behalf and asked that those caught up in the mess be treated as individuals, not as the party as a whole.

“Any tape whether real or imaginary can be concocted in this digital world; we don’t know what is real and what is not,” Mr Metuh said. “I also believe that the actors in their personal capacity will be able to talk about what really happened.

“As a political party, we have never engaged in planning or getting involved in any conspiracy to rig elections or alter the will of the people,” Mr. Metuh said.
