Mr. Chukwuemeka Nwatu, chairman of the Enugu State Local Government Service Commission says the body is uncovering ghost workers on payrolls of the 17 local government areas and 57 development centres in the state.

Nwatu said the commission had met with the heads of departments of administration, accounts, education and social welfare, health and planning, research and statistics to ease its task.

`We are now building a compendium. When we have this compendium, we will get into what we call ‘personnel audits’.

"We will embark on serious personnel audit after our tour. You cannot embark on personnel audit when you don’t have the nominal rolls.

"Now, we are trying to collate all these nominal rolls to be in a form of compendium. So, the moment we finish our tour, we will go into the personnel audit.

"And already, there are few internal staff verifications that are going on within every local government and every development centre.

"That one is being taken by our various HPMs (Heads of Personnel Management) in order to take care of those ghost workers.

"The real audit that will be anchored by this commission will come on board later this year.

The chairman added that the major challenge facing the commission was poor funding because the one per cent of the local government allocation prescribed for it by the law was not adequate.
