Nigeria- Dr Sijibomi Olusanya, Provost, Federal College of Education(Technical) FCE(T), Akoka, Lagos, on Monday said he was discussing with the unions in the institution to avert their proposed strike.

He said that sequel to the 14-day ultimatum issued by the unions, the authorities had met with them and was still discussing with them, to avert the strike.

He said the Executive Secretary, National Commission of Colleges (NCC) had also intervened, and scheduled a meeting with the unions for Feb. 4, 2015, to resolve the issues.

The provost said the arrears of the promotion and increment were not paid because government had yet to release subvention to the institution.

``No government agency had received allocation since last quarter of 2014.

``It is, therefore, illegal for the college to pay the arrears without getting subvention from the government," he said.

Olusanya said the debt was not peculiar to the institution as the information he got from his fellow provosts was that they were yet to pay their staff.

NAN reports that the three unions of the college had issued its authorities a two-week ultimatum to take effect from Jan. 15 to Jan.28.

The unions comprise the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU); the Senior Staff Union of Colleges of Education in Nigeria (SSUCOEN) and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), FCE(T), Akoka chapter.
