Business Former INEC Boss, Maurice Iwu Heads SON Committee On Standardization of Herbal Medicines

The Standard Organization of Nigeria has constituted a committee that will work out modalities for the standardization of herbal medicines in Nigeria.

At the inauguration of the committee, the Director-General, SON, Dr. Joseph Odumodu said the move is to help boost the demand for herbal products.

The DG urged the committee which is headed by Prof. Maurice Iwu, a former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission to assist the country to boost the standards of herbal medicines to meet the WHO certification system on quality of pharmaceutical products in the international committee.

The DG who was represented by the Director Legal, Mr. Imari Kawu, stated that the committee would help articulate Nigeria's Contributions to the harmonisation process of the African Regional Organization for Standardisation's Technical committee on African Traditional Medicine.

Prof. Maurice Iwu while responding, promised to work towards ensuring effective regulation among herbal medicine practitioners. He also canvassed that traditional medicine be included in the Nigeria's health care delivery system in view of its efficacy in curing some life threatening ailments.
