The political tension in Rivers state took another turn today as we received reports that the venue of the APC rally in Okrika Local Government in Rivers State, the National School Field, has come under attack from gunmen.

According to Daily Post, the gunment destroyed the state, canopies and chairs using explosives.

Dakuku Peterside, the APC governorship candidate, was scheduled to be in Okrika as part of his campaign trail in Rivers.

According to Ibim Semenitari, Peterside's Director of Media and Publicity, the armed men struck at about 3am, wrecking the venue.

He said the men shot sporadically to cause panic before they exacted their egregious attack.

“It was burnt and not gutted by fire. At about 3:45am, armed men whom we don’t know came and started shooting. The boys working at the venue had to run for their lives. At about 4am, they started throwing dynamites.

“As I speak, they have destroyed the stage, the sound system; they destroyed the canopies. They have destroyed everything.

“This is worrisome for us. The APC has continued to conduct itself in the most peaceful manner. The APC is resolved not to fight, the APC is resolved not to use violence because we believe that an election is supposed to be peaceful and credible," she said.

She said the campaign in Okrika was now uncertain.
