Strong indications emerged that some indigenous ship owners overtly or covertly promote criminal activities such as sea robbery, piracy and ransom taking on the nation’s territorial waters.
Some indigenous ship owners were sometime last year indicted for hiring their tanker vessels to criminals in a desperate bid to make money in order to remain afloat. The criminals used the tankers to hijack other vessels on legitimate trade mission and siphon their contents only to release them and their crew after their illicit business.
In what however appear as a new twist to this trend, it was gathered that some ship owners deliberately leave their wrecked ships and other crafts on the waters, which provide a safe haven for the criminals to carry out their nefarious activities.
