Sports ITF Championship: Five Nigerian players crash out, two through

Five Nigerian tennis athletes have crashed out of the International Tennis Federation West and Central Junior Circuit taking place in Lome,Togo.

Only two are now left in the competition,with the five eliminated ones following a succession chain that saw them lose on the same day of the competition.

However the two that are left have been going strong in the competition. Joseph Ubon defeated Turkey’s Cagatay Ozeserker in the third round on Wednesday to book his place in the last 8.

Ubon is the defending champion and he will be hoping to retain the title he won last year after beating Ozeserker in straight sets 6-2, 6-1.

In the doubles event,the Nigerian duo of Emmanuel Audu and Abubakar Tswako defeated Malians Amadu Diara and Yacouba Maiga 6-4, 6-2, while Ubon and Mohammed Mohammed beat Kahaneu Dolet(Ivory Coast) Ibrahim Ibrahim(Benin) 6-1, 6-4 to make the semis.

“It has been a good tournament for Nigerian players even though we are looking forward to repeating or having a better performance that earned us top place in the first phase,”President of the Nigeria Tennis Federation, Sani Ndanusa said in a statement.
