Sports Justin Gatlin overlooked for IAAF World Athlete of the Year award

American sprinter Justin Gatlin has failed to make the final shortlist for the IAAF World Athlete of the Year award.

Qatari high jumper Mutaz Essa Barshmi, Kenyan marathon world record holder Dennis Kipruto Kimetto and French pole vaulter Renaud Lavillenie are the male athletes who made the final three cut.

While in the women's category, New Zealand shot-putter Valerie Adams, Ethiopian long and middle distance runner Genzebe Dibaba and Dutch sprinter Dafne Schippers are the female athletes named for the final three.

Gatlin initially made the final ten-man shortlist, but it was greeted with a spate of criticisms, with many seeing him as a cheat.

The 32-year-old had served two bans for doping in the past, but he posted the fastest time in the short distance races this season.

Gatlin registered a time of 9.77 seconds in the 100m just an hour before running the 200m in breathtaking 19.71 seconds.
