Team Nigeria's prospects of winning medals at the 2014 Commonwealth Games looks very bleak with reports emerging that some many sports federations have been left on their own to prepare without funds from the National Sports Commission(NSC).

According to a report on Vanguard Sports, some of the federations have been asked by the Sports ministry to look for avenues to generate funds that will sustain them and not to be dependent on the NSC.

With the games commencing tomorrow in Glasgow,Scotland some sports federations in Nigeria have openly voiced their frustration for not being adequately prepared for the Games.

Even the Nigeria Olympic Committee who would have ordinarily subsidized the expenses of the federations, have not gotten any allowance from the NSC with just a day to the Commonwealth Games.

“This is a bad situation but what can we do but to keep on hoping that things will change” an official of the NOC said.

“We wish Nigeria well but the thing that the NSC does not realise is that we complement them at the Games. They cannot do it alone. They need us to get things done in Glasgow and if they deny us of funds, then they are denying Nigeria of victory” he added.

In their own defence,an official of the sports ministry said that they have done their part in preparing Nigerian athletes.

“They should be self-sufficient and stop begging for money every time that we are competing in international competitions. We have prepared the athletes and believe that our best will yield us medals in Glasgow” he said.

Nigeria will be competing in six different sports categories at the Commonwealth Games.
