Barcelona star Lionel Messi on Monday won for a record fifth time the FIFA Ballon d'Or award, with Cristiano Ronaldo coming in second and Neymar taking the third position.
Neymar had 7% of the vote, Ronaldo had 27%. Messi had 41.33% of the votes.
There's a strong rivalry between Ronaldo and Messi and both of them have been nominated for the award for the last 9 years. Messi won the award for four straight years (2009 to 2012) before Monday while Ronaldo won the award in 2008, 2013 and 2014.
Here are 5 reasons why Messi merits the award more than Ronaldo this time around.
1. He has more goal contribution than Ronaldo. Ronaldo in the year under contention had 74 goals and assists in 57 games while Messi had 78 goals and assists in 61 games. Messi also created more goal scoring chances.
2. Trophies. Messi won the treble in year 2015 (Champions League, La Liga, Copa Del Rey). Ronaldo had zilch.
3. Key match performances. Ronaldo it seems is fading out, he's still a fantastic player though and can cause havoc. However his ability to turn things around for his team when in trouble is receding. Madrid's match against PSG, the recent El-classico comes to mind. Messi on the other hand was instrumental all the way to the final of the champions league and the La Liga.
