Several influential Nigerians have been dragged into the mud following the discovery that funds meant to purchase arms were shared among them under the Goodluck Jonathan presidency.

Goodluck Jonathan is yet to comment on the matter and his silence is pregnant with reason. Recently, the Socio-Economic Rights Accountability Project, SERAP, demanded answers and asked him to tender an apology to Nigerians.

Furthermore, his party, the PDP has asked him to speak up and clear his name. Here are six reasons why the ex-president must break his "oath of silence" over the matter:

- Set things right for his party. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) under which he emerged as president has become an object of public ridicule and harsh criticisms over the scandal. Everyone in the party, whether innocent or guilty are being tagged as corrupt. In light of this shame, Jonathan must speak up to redeem his party, whose goodwill he's enjoyed for years.

Clear the air about the funding for his last presidential campaign. If the PDP organised a dinner where billions of naira was raised money for Jonathan’s campaign, what then is the explanation for the armsgate?

Curb rumors about the purchase of arms for the Boko Haram war. Jonathan can not act aloof in all these as these alleged crimes were perpetuated under his watch. He should clarify whether he instructed his former NSA to divert the money meant to fight Boko Haram into his campaign.

It's his duty. Jonathan held the highest authority in the last administration and therefore must answer questions on what he knows or doesn’t know about the scandal.

– Jonathan had said that his government never awarded any contract in the range of US$2bn, so where did this money come from? Jonathan must tell Nigerians.

– Moreover, it is disturbing to think it possible that one man (Dasuki), all by himself could have disbursed such mind-boggling amount without the approval of the President and Commander in Chief. If he (Dasuki) actually did it all on his own, then Jonathan must tell us where he traveled to or if Dasuki was the President in his stead.

If not for the last point which stated that GEJ might have travelled or if Dasuki was indeed our president for period of time that all Nigerian citizens are unaware of, I would really suggest we live Jonathan's name out of the Arms deal scandal.
* Jonathan has said he never gave out any contract to the tune of 2 billion dollars.
From what I understand, Dasuki and whoever made th withdrawal possible thought the best cover was to use Arms as an excuse to take such amount of money from the nations reserve, which is even worse if people put it together, because it will become public knowledge that the money is far much more greater than 2.1 billion dollars. This is of course, with the present development that a Whooping 1 trillion was sighted in the account of 4 service chiefs.
Dasuki is going down alone, provided there is no single paper that indicates the approval of such money with Jonathan's signature.
Long live GEJ

Are you really serious? Jonathan should be left alone...are you saying he is not aware of all that happened in his government? Since he is, he is also culpable.

Just a hypothesis, provided there are no paper trails to Jonathan. You'll be surprised how courts and lawyers do things with absolute disregard for the constitution as if they are excluded from adhering to it.
