Sports Messi the record-breaker; now the highest goalscorer in Spain with 253 goals

Barcelona star Lionel Messi is now the leading all-time goalscorer in Spain after breaking Telmo Zarra's long standing record to top with 253 goals in the Spanish La Liga.

The Argentine achieved the milestone in Barcelona's astonishing 5-1 win over Sevilla at the Nou Camp.

Messi opened the scores with a trademark free-kick to match Zarra's mark of 251 goals in the first half equalling the tally of the former Spanish great and former Atletico Madrid player.

Not content at just matching the record, Messi added two goals in the second half to steer clear of Zarra, and is now firmly on top as the top marksman.

Remarkably, it is a feat that he has been able to achieve at just 27 years of age, scoring the goals in 289 games.

"Messi is without doubt the best player I've seen as a player and a coach," said Barca manager Luis Enrique after that feat.

Below is a breakdown of Messi's statistics
538 games
412 goals
163 assists
27 hat-tricks
4 Ballon d'Ors
23 trophies
