According to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Nigeria accounts for over 14 per cent of the World’s maternal deaths.

According to the UNFPA representative in Nigeria, Ratidzai Ndhlovu, lamented that Nigeria with only two per cent of the world’s population has a maternal mortality ratio of 576 per 100,000 live births (NDHS 2013), Daily Independent reports.

According to her, “wide regional variations exist in maternal mortality across the zones in Nigeria. Maternal mortality in the North West and North East is six times and nine times respectively the rate of 165/100, 000 live births recorded in the South West Zone.”

The UNFPA representative said the main causes of maternal mortality in Nigeria include haemorrhage, which accounts for 23 per cent; infections, 17 per cent; unsafe abortion, 11 per cent; eclampsia, 11 per cent; malaria, 11 per cent; anaemia, 11 per cent; and others (including HIV/AIDS), about 5 per cent.
