Islamist gang that kidnapped and murdered engineer could be released in prisoner swap for schoolgirls.

A gang arrested for the murder of a British hostage in Nigeria could be among those freed in a potential prisoner swap sought by Boko Haram, which is holding more than 200 schoolgirls captive.

The Islamist group has paraded the children before a camera and demanded a mass exchange for its “brethren” held in Nigeria’s jails.

The Telegraph has learnt that an eight-strong group accused of the kidnapping and killing of Chris McManus, a British engineer, is among the hundreds of Boko Haram detainees currently in Nigerian custody.

Mr McManus, 28, from Oldham in Greater Manchester, was abducted with an Italian colleague, Franco Lamolinara, in northern Nigeria in May 2011. They were killed by their captors when a joint force of Nigerian troops and British special forces tried to rescue them 10 months later.
