Despite being declared free of the Ebola virus by the World Health Organization weeks ago, Nigeria remains on high alert against a fresh outbreak of the disease in the country, which, theoretically is still possible.
The Association of Nigerian Physicians in America (ANPA) during the week donated Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) worth $60,000 (N10.2 million) to the First Consultants Medical Centre (FCMC) Ikoyi, Lagos, the Lagos State Ministry of Health (LSMoH) and the Guild of Medical Directors, Lagos Branch, which represented private hospitals. GUARDIAN reports.
FCMC is generally regarded as the epicentre of the EVD preparedness and response in Nigeria because it was the hospital that made the diagnosis of the index case in the country, Mr. Patrick Sawyer, the Liberian-American.
An epidemiologist at LSMoH, Dr. Ismail Abdulsalam, yesterday at the official presentation of the materials, appreciated efforts of ANPA.
"LSMoH and the Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH) have not gone to sleep. We are still on Ebola surveillance," he said.
