The House of representatives has approved the removal of the immunity clause which shields the President of Nigeria, Governors from prosecution while in office. THE NATION has this story.

The final process in the amendment of the constitution started in the House of Representatives yesterday. The House approved 71 amendments to the Constitution after an executive session.

The mandatory two-thirds required (240 of the 360-member House) for the amendment to pass was met as 252 of the 261 members that voted were in favour of the amendments. Eight voted against and one abstained. The lawmakers have placed the National Security Agencies, the office of the Auditor-General of the Federation, the Police, Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission, on a first-line charge from Nigeria’s Consolidated Revenue Account.

The President or Deputy President of Senate and Speaker or Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives are to receive pension for life as approved by the lawmakers.
