Suleiman Abba, Nigeria's Inspector General of Police has partially reversed his directive that Nigerians need to leave the polling centres as soon as they have voted on Saturday. He has augmented his statement following the counter-directives from the INEC, Nigeria's leading political parties and the First lady of Nigeria, Dame Patience Jonathan.

Last week he had warned voters not to stay behind after voting, saying that it would mean people are taking the law into their hands if they stay to 'protect their votes.' He however declared that the police would see to it that all votes count.

However, the First Lady at a PDP women rally in Enugu said:

“After voting on March 28, make sure you follow your votes till the end. Do not leave the arena until the counting ends."

Now the IGP has backtracked, saying he did not order Nigerians to leave the polling centres, but merely 'advised' them to. He said the police would prefer that voters leave to prevent violence breaking out.
