Panic broke out yesterday at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, MMIA in Lagos after a Nigerian who had survived the Ebola Virus Disease in Sierra Leone had arrived Lagos aboard the Royal Air Maroc.

The man, named Mr. Theophilu Onnaikhinon, had flown in from Sierra Leone whilst his younger brther, Chinedu Eroka, is reported to have bailed out on the Sierra Leonean authorities.

Sources say that Mr. Onnaikhinon had already been certified cured of the disease a few weeks ago. The source also claimed that Onnaikhinon has been helped into the country by the consular officer of Nigeria, Mrs. T. Mohammed, to avoid the stigmatization by Nigerian health officials and other airport authorities.

However, upon entering Nigeria, he was promptly handed to the Port Health Officials at the Lagos airport. They immediately isolated and quarantined him.

This was done so Nigerian officials could check his health status and confirm that he was free of the disease before he could be allowed to mix with the public.

As the source put it: “It is true that there was Ebola scare at the Lagos airport today, (yesterday) but the fact is that the victim had been cured of the disease in Sierra Leone before being assisted into Nigeria by our consular officer in that country and immediately he landed, he was handed over to the port health authorities who immediately carried out checks on him and isolated him from the other passengers.

“But, the truth is that we just want to recheck what has already been done by the Sierra Leonean authorities. You know, we cannot take chances again in the country. I can assure you that the situation is under control.”
