On Saturday, President Goodluck Jonathan held a closed-door meeting at Aso Rock Villa, Abuja with the five northern governors most critical of his bid to secure re-election in 2015. The meeting, which lasted for several hours, had in attendance governors Babangida Aliyu (Niger), Rabiu Kwankwaso (Kano), Murtala Nyako (Adamawa), Kashim Shettima (Borno) andSule Lamido (Jigawa).

The meeting is said to be an initiative of the President to enable him listen to their grievances with a view to appeasing them and preventing them from joining the opposition.

According to Sunday vanguard sources, the five governors demanded the immediate sack of Alhaji Bamanga Tukur ; National Chairman, PDP as the criteria for peace. The governors faulted Takur’s dictatorship style of leadership.

The governors also expressed their misgivings over the Rivers crisis and advised the President not to take sides. On Monday, the governors also met with former Heads of State, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida and Gen. Abdusalami Abubakar on the same issues in Minna, Niger State capital.

The President is also said to have intimated the five visiting governors of his plans to recruit the recently freed ex-Chief Security Officer (CSO) to the late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha into his re-election campaign team .

Whether the demands of the governors will be met and whether Major Hamza Al-Mustapha would become part of President Goodluck Jonathans campaign is yet unknown.
