Amnesty International has released a graphic new video showing the brutality with which the Nigerian military tortured civilians under the guise of fighting the Boko Haram terrorist sect.
In the video below which was released today, we see what appear to be military personnel slitting the throats of 16 civilians before unceremoniously tossing them into an open grave.
Amnesty International is calling it a 'war crime.'
The video, Amnesty International says, was gotten from numerous sources in Borno State, the birthplace of the Boko Haram group, declaring that it has confirmed that the men in military garb in the video were, indeed, military personnel.
Amnesty also said the Nigerian military kills prisoners.
The Punch newspaper says: "Some of the footage was apparently taken on March 14, the same day that Boko Haram broke into a military detention centre in Giwa barracks, freeing hundreds of prisoners. Amnesty says the military recaptured more than 600 of these prisoners and killed them."
Meanwhile, the DHQ spokesman, Chris Olukolade, said in an email to the newspaper that the military was studying the video footage "with a view to identifying those behind such acts," promising legal action when the culprits are found.
It should be recalled that the Nigerian military had in the past denied such acts of brutality, declaring that it followed international best practice in fighting against terrorists.
Amnesty International notes that more than 4,000 people - most of them civilians - have been killed 'by all sides' of this conflict.
