A 400-level student who spoke to PM News anonymously said, “We were going for the services in the morning and night and people were getting tired of it because we were also preparing for exams. So, the Vice- Chancellor got angry and ordered that those who missed the services be sanctioned.

''Some were suspended for four weeks and those who had missed eight services for the four days got a year.”

Another 300-level student said, “The mood in school is really tense. Though students are not protesting but they are angry because you are preparing for an exam you’re not sure you will sit for, until the paper starts. They stopped me from sitting for a paper last week because I did not go for a service and I don’t know if I will be allowed in today either.”

This is nonsense. But unfortunately, it may not get the necessary attention -- as a social problem that it is -- rather, some people will focus on very cheap excuses that it is faith-based varsity and that you've to agree with every damn 'foolish' thing. I don't know when it became a crime for adults to decide what to do with their life and personal time. Adults go to tertiary institutions, not babies. Faith-based or not, tertiary institutions exist not for foolish dictates and show of power, it is the domain of learning.

they signed a matriculation oath. Their student handbook is clear on religious activities. Their parents clearly do not consider them adults.

I'm sure you signed a matriculation oath too in college. Did you keep to every damn thing before graduation?

i attended everything that was necessary for graduation. Dared the grey areas. They know the system they're in. Why not go elsewhere or comply and graduate
