Whether you’re just learning to drive or an experienced car driver, learning a few driving safety more wouldn’t hurt you, it’d only reinforce what you already knew or teach you what you thought you knew. The bottom line is that everyone behind the wheel needs to learn and be constantly reminded of basic road safety tips that will safeguard lives and property

For drivers

i. Don’t drink and drive: That is fast becoming a cliché, yet people fail to observe this basic driving rule. What this means is that you must never drive after tasting any little amount of alcohol, and you must also never drink while driving a car on the road. Even a slight amount of alcohol will impair your vision and judgement if you drive, and you are twice likely to be involved in an accident if you drink and drive.

ii. Don’t use the phone while driving: Making or receiving a call while driving endangers your life, and even using a “hands-free” device can distract your attention behind the wheel and lead to an accident. Avoid using the phone or any mobile device to make or receive calls while driving, it is distracting and could be fatal.

iii. Use seat belts: Seat belts are not made to decorate a car or to only reveal the year of manufacture, but it is made to save lives in the event of an accident. Seat belts are not only made for the driver and the front passenger, they are also made for rear passengers. So everyone in the car should belt up if the car has rear seat belts for rear passengers. This is a necessity and must never be compromised, even if you don’t like seat belts.

iv. Do not overspeed: Overspeeding leads to accidents and uncontrolled driving. It makes you lose control of the car in the event of a sudden happenchance like a cow crossing the road, and causes sudden panic and loss of composure. Even though you’re on a long trip on a highway, you must drive within limits so that you don’t panic or lose control when something crosses your vision. Do not be tempted by the long stretch of expressway stretching out ahead of you.

v. Be careful while driving in the city: You must take extra care when driving in the city or in busy places. You must consider other drivers irrational and make an allowance for any irrational driver. You must exercise great precaution while driving past schools, open restaurants, children park, and pedestrian crossings since children and some people are impulsive when crossing the road, and you don’t want to hurt them. You must also be careful with motorcyclists, tricycles, cyclists, truck drivers and other road users.

For pedestrians

i. Only use pedestrian crossings: Pedestrian crossings are also called zebra-crossings and you must only use these spots to cross the roads if you’re a pedestrian. The reason for this is because all road drivers are trained to slow down at zebra-crossings opposite public schools and in busy streets.

ii. Watch left, right, and left again: That is very plain, you must watch out to your left, and then your right, and then your left again before crossing the road in areas not designated as zebra-crossings.

iii. Walk facing an incoming vehicle: You must never walk along the road with vehicles coming up from behind your back; it is better to walk and see oncoming vehicles face you than from behind you. This means it is better to walk by the right side of the road than the left, with the right side you see oncoming vehicles but with the left the vehicles come behind you.

iv. Do not use headphones while walking along the road: Using headphones and listening to music while walking along the road makes you oblivious of vehicles and this could be fatal since you won’t hear blaring horns. So do away with headphones on the roads until you get home to bed.

v. Don’t walk the road with children in tow: It is not good to use the road with 3-4 children in tow all clinging to you. It is not safe and must be avoided. It is best if you have only one kid walking along the road ahead of you or crossing the road with you, but having more than two is bad and dangerous for everyone – not on busy roads where most drivers are untrained and careless.
