The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday donated N250 million to the victims of the Mile 1 market fire disaster as a way showing concern for their plight.

Presenting the cheque in Port Harcourt on behalf of President Goodluck Jonathan, Alhaji Adamu Muazu, the National Chairman of PDP said it was a demonstration of the party’s love for humanity.

Mu'azu described PDP as a people-oriented political party, said that it was the party’s desire to put smiles on the faces of the downtrodden.

He assured them of the party’s determination to ensure that the market was rebuilt as soon as PDP formed government in the state.

The president asserted the party’s readiness to take over power both at the federal and state levels come 2015.

Also speaking, the minister of state for education, Chief Nyesom Wike, emphasised the imperatives of extending hands of fellowship.

Wike said that PDP as a conscientious political party could not afford to allow its people wallow in abject squalor hence the assistance.

He blamed the state government for abandoning its constitutional obligation to the people, adding that PDP was always alive to matters of human interest.

On his part, the Deputy National Chairman of the PDP, Prince Uche Secondus, described the gesture as a rescue operation, saying that it was time to restore collapsed institutions in the state.

Secondus explained that PDP was on top of the situation, saying that the party’s good plans could not be realised without the people’s support.

He stressed the need to rise above selfish inclinations but embrace people-oriented issues whereby solution could be proffered to people’s problems.
