Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari may not be seeking re-election in the 2019 general elections.

Aisha Alhassan, the minister of women affairs and loyal to former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar gave her reasons in an interview with Reuters.

She listed the following as possible reasons President Buhari may not go further for a second term in Office.

1. He was first elected that he would only seek one term

2. During the 2015 election build up, President Buhari did not intend to run in 2019 - “He said he was going to run for only one time to clean up the mess that the (previous) PDP government did in Nigeria”.

4. The Minister wants former Vice President, Abubakar Atiku to take over from Buhari in 2019 - Alhassan said in the interview she would resign if Buhari seeks re-election and would support former vice president Atiku Abubakar if he decides to run.

5. Alhassan’s portfolio ranks relatively low down in Nigeria’s cabinet – She fought the Taraba election petition upto the Supreme Court

6. Many people doubt whether Buhari is well enough to serve another term in Nigeria, which is Africa’s most populous country and has the continent’s biggest economy.

It was his second stint of sick leave this year following a break between January and March.
