Egypt coach Hector Cuper has said that the Pharaohs were lucky to snatch the late equaliser against Nigeria in the African Cup of Nations qualifying match played at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium on Friday in Kaduna.

The Super Eagles were close to registering a slim 1-0 win over the seven-time African champions before Roma winger, Mohamed Salah, netted in stoppage time to help Egypt secure a precious 1-1 draw away to Nigeria which thus saw them retaining the top spot in Group G of the qualifiers.

“I can’t deny that we were lucky to score the equaliser against Nigeria, but it was a reward for our performance through the whole match,” Cuper told the Egyptian press.

Looking ahead, while Cuper rates the Nigeria team high, he is confident that his boys will not falter as they host the Super Eagles in the second of a double-header at Alexandria’s Borg El-Arab Stadium on Tuesday.

“Nigeria is a strong team with excellent players who have a winning mentality as they play for big European clubs,” Cuper said.
