Politics Aggrieved APC members in Oyo set to defect to Labour Party

Some aggrieved members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State are set to defect to the Labour Party, a letter made available to newsmen on Sunday in Ibadan has revealed.

The letter, which was signed by Labour Party’s National Chairman, Chief Dan Nwanyanwu, stated that its National Working Committee had accepted the defecting APC members.

It said the new members would soon be inaugurated by the national leadership of the Party.

According to the letter, the faction of the APC set to defect to LP were mainly young politicians in the age bracket of between 40 and 50 years.

It said the defectors included some immediate past board chairmen in Gov. Abiola Ajimobi-led administration and aggrieved loyalists of the late leader of APC and former governor of the state, Alhaji Lam Adesina.

‘’The young politicians had shown their disapproval to the conduct of the 2011 election where the flag bearer was chosen among eight other aspirants without primaries being conducted by the leadership of the party,’’ it said.

The letter said that after series of strategic meetings with the Labour Party leadership including Gov. Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo in Akure, the APC faction was allotted some slots for the party’s offices including co-chairmanship position.

It added that those appointed as co-chairman for Oyo LP is Mr Gbenga Olayemi, a former Chairman of the Oyo State Council for Youth Development.

The letter added that others included Alhaji Basiru Apapa, (co-chairman), Alhaji Musbau Popoola (state deputy chairman), Mr Tayo Adeagbo (state deputy chairman) and Mr Okesooto Biliaminu (state deputy chairman).

It added that Mr Gbenga Oyekola (state secretary); Chief Caleb Oyaniyi (state organising secretary); Mr Kazeem Adedeji (state publicity secretary); Mrs Ayo Ogunleye (state women leader) and Mr Moruf Aderoju (state financial secretary) are also included.

According to the letter, the interim committee was advised to set machinery in motion for the conduct of state congresses soon.

The letter, dated Feb. 10 also read in part: “Following the series of deliberations in Oyo State chapter of the Labour Party, the National Working Committee (NWC) has approved the composition of an interim committee.

" It will be headed by Alhaji Basiru Apapa and Mr Gbenga Olayemi as co-chairmen towards the state congresses of the party in Oyo State.

“Henceforth, the activities of the Labour Party shall rest squarely on the shoulders of the interim committee and they are expected to prepare the party for the forthcoming congresses in the state very soon."
