Airtel and Opera have made a brand-new partnership and this time, it is in favor of the mobile internet years. This time, instead of paying for your data based on bytes (or megabytes, as the case usually is), you can pay depending on the duration you spend online, or based on the number of websites you visit.

This new, site-based or time-based service is called Opera Web Pass and it will include 17 African countries.

How does this work? Subscribers just simply need to launch Opera on their phones, select 1 for “Opera Web Pass” on the speed-dial part of their start page and select from the list based on their preferences.

The idea, Airtel Africa’s Chief Marketing Officer, Andre Beyers says, is to give customers the opportunity to choose data bundles based on their surfing habits. Mobile internet users who do not have data plans can use this service by simply choosing the time period they would use the internet, instead of paying for specific megabytes.

The big question: will you use Opera Web Pass?
