Contrary to popular belief, the Presidential Amnesty Office has stated that the crude oil thieves and pirates currently committing crimes against the nation is in no way an indication of the failure of the federal government's amnesty programme.

There has been no evidence that former militants with which the amnesty agreement was made with are involved in the criminal actions, although investigations are still being conducted over the activities in the region. The office also said that the crude oil theft was being masterminded by international syndicates.

"The Presidential Amnesty Office was not surprised about the verbal attack on the amnesty programme by the Interim National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Lai Mohammed", said the Head, Media & Communications, Presidential Amnesty Programme, Mr. Dan Alabrah.
