Politics Anambra Elections: Over 400 Security Operatives Bar APC Chieftains, Protesters from INEC Offices

On Thursday, over 400 Nigerian security operatives comprising of soldiers, Department of State Security Service (DSS) officers, regular and anti-riot policemen , Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and Armoured Personnel Carriers were mobilized to stop protesters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from gaining access to the National Headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja.

The APC led by Senator Bola Tinubu, General Muhammed Buhari and former FCT Minister, Mallam Nasir El-Rufari among others stormed the office to protest the outcome of the Anambra State governorship election.

According to the Nigerian Tribune, other notable protesters included former Zamfara State governor, Senator Sani Yerima; the National Chairman of the defunct ANPP, Dr Ogbonaya Onu; Chief Segun Osoba; Otunba Niyi Adebayo; Senator George Akume, and a former member of the House of Representatives, Dino Melaye.

The protesters were demanding a shake up of INEC's structure ahead of the 2015 general elections. The protests lasted for about one hour.

Shouts of “Jega is a thief” by the protesters rented the air while they also displayed posters and handbills with inscriptions, “overhaul INEC now; 2015, this INEC is not capable,” among others.

Meanwhile, it has also been reported that INEC Chairman, Professor Attahiru Jega and other top officials of the commission went into hiding while the protest raged.
