With the gubernatorial election of Anambra State just by the corner, scheduled for November 16, 2013 the Independent National Electoral Commission has expressed her worry over the unwillingness expressed by the voters in the state.

The voters’ apathy as revealed by the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner in Anambra State, Prof. C. E. Onukaogu, spoke of the prevailing voter apathy in the state at a Civil Society/INEC dialogue organised by the Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre in Abuja, who said that the outcome of the election will not reflect the real choice of the people.

According to Punch Newspaper, Onukaogu who drew the attention of the voters’ apathy said, “Available statistics from the operations department (INEC Anambra) show that the generality of the electorate in Anambra State are not keen to vote.

Identifying violence and the “attitude of politicians” as major factors responsible for the development, the REC noted that the state was likely to witness a repeat of the situation during the 2011 general elections when only 28.8 per cent of the registered voters participated.

He said, “A number of factors are responsible for the apathy of the electorate in Anambra State. The insecurity, which bedevils elections in Nigeria, has made the electorate to develop apathy to elections. The attitude of politicians also makes the electorate in Anambra State to be apathetic towards elections.”

Onukaogu, however, said INEC intended to address the problem “through an appropriate voter education programme” so that “the generality of the people of Anambra State are to begin to participate actively in elections by casting their votes.”

They should worry about the whole country and blame the politicians.
